Var: a "threatening" man armed with a machete near a school in La Seyne-sur-Mer, he was neutralized

This Thursday, September 18, a man was killed by police gunfire near the Pierre Semard nursery school in La Seyne-sur-Mer, a town in the Var region near Toulon. The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. The deceased man, aged around thirty, was near the school and was harassing children, according to information reported by Var-Matin . "The police were alerted late in the afternoon of a man walking around with a machete near the Berthe estate. He was acting and making threatening comments, which prompted police intervention," said Toulon public prosecutor Samuel Finielz at a press conference at 6 p.m.
This individual fled when police arrived to arrest him. Chased by the police, the individual reportedly found himself cornered in a small garden near the school and threatened the officers with a machete. To neutralize the suspect, "two uses of the taser" were made by the police without succeeding in disarming him. "As he approached, the police opened fire in the direction of his legs," said the magistrate, adding that "six shots were fired."
The man "died a few minutes later after firefighters attempted to resuscitate him." The individual's identity has not been released.
Although this individual was seen near a nursery school armed with a machete, "there was no contact between the individual and the minors nearby," according to initial investigations, the prosecutor indicated. A security perimeter has been established near the school and the scene where the individual confronted law enforcement, reports Var-Matin. The mayor of La Seyne, Jo Minniti, and his deputy for security, Cheikh Mansour, went to the scene, the local media added.
Two investigations have been opened: one into "violence committed against a third party and the police" and a second investigation "into the circumstances surrounding the police opening fire."
